Course Information and Policies

BENEFITS OF MTO APPROVED BEGINNER DRIVER EDUCATION COURSES

  • Learn to drive safely and legally from a college trained and government licenced Driving Instructor.
  • Reduce your road test eligibility apprenticeship period, from 12 months to 8 months.
  • Qualified graduates are eligible to receive maximum discounts from Automobile Insurers.

Your Driving Course MUST be completed within 6 months, from your first theory class.

IN CLASSOOM THEORY & HOMELINK WORKBOOK

  1. Classroom theory is 20 hours with 2 multiple choice tests (50% of theory mark).
  2. You will be issued a Student Workbook. Bring it to all theory sessions. (50% of theory mark).
  3. The student workbook accounts for 10 hours of theory, it is a HomeLink assignment.
  4. Student workbook must be completed and handed in by the last classroom session or 10 marks will deducted.
    If the Student Workbook is lost, there will be a $15 replacement fee.
  5. If you fail a classroom theory test, you can re-test or re-take the theory course (if you want to be certified).
  6. If you miss a theory class, call 613-737-9595 or email info@ottawadrivingschool.com for your available options.
  7. Disruptive behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated. Students will be asked to leave the classroom.
  8. Sleepy students will be sent home and can redo the classroom theory at a later date at no charge.
  9. Food and drink is allowed in the classroom, but you must clean up after yourselves. There is no custodian.
  10. Attendance: Sign is and sign out for the classroom theory session, or you will have to redo the session.

IN CAR DRIVING LESSONS

  1. In car training is 10 hours for automatic in total (12 hours for manual shift - 8 on automatic and 4 on manual shift).
  2. You must have a valid G1 or G2 or G Ontario Drivers Licence to start in car training.
  3. You will make your appointments directly with your Driving Instructor in 1 or 1.5 or 2 hour sessions per day.
    Most people require 30+ hours of behind the wheel driving experience, in order to pass their road test.
    If you do not have a vehicle to practice with, then additional training is available at extra cost.

  4. You will be issued an In Car Training Record / Driving Evaluation (yellow form),
    Bring this form to your in car training sessions.  
    Do not leave this yellow form with your instructor!
        You will need this form, if you change instructors.
    If you lose your In Car Training Record / Driving Evaluation, there is a $10 replacement fee for administration.
  5. Students will use the Instructor's car for all lessons. Training cars are equipped with dual brakes, proper insurance, and proper licencing to meet MTO standards.
  6. The In Car evaluation must be passed in order to be certified. The pass mark is 80% 
  7. For in car driving lessons, if the student is sleepy or drugged, the lesson will be cancelled, ($30 fee to instructor).

TO CANCEL AN IN CAR DRIVING LESSON:         Call your instructor at least 24 hours in advance.

Late cancellations or missed appointments, WILL BE CHARGED $30 (payable to your in-car instructor).

Instructors may be late or have to cancel an appointment with short notice, due to traffic delays, DriveTest appointment delays, bad weather, or vehicle breakdowns. We apologize in advance for situations beyond our control. We endevour to be on time and reliable. Should there be a problem, please contact the Instructor directly or the office to correct the situation.

TO GET CERTIFIED

Upon successful completion of all the requirements of both in-class and the in-car components, students who have paid all fees, will have their certificate added electronically to their Driver’s Licence History. This transfer is authorized by the Government of Ontario, Ministry of Transportation (MTO). BDE Graduates with a Driver's Licence History may be eligible for an insurance discount.  There is NO PAPER CERTIFICATE.

We can provide you with a paper copy of your Certification Transaction Receipt from MTO.

This can be picked up, mailed, faxed, or emailed.

 Allow 2 working days for this service. Theory and practical pass mark is 80%.

WE NEED THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS TO CERTIFY YOU

  1. Two (2) classroom theory tests (20 question & 30 question) with a pass mark of 80% or higher.
  2. Complete and hand in your student workbook at the last class with a pass mark of 80% or higher.
  3. Hand in, mail in, email, fax in, your In-Car Training Record / In-Car Evaluation with a pass mark of 80% +
    This yellow form must be properly filled in, dated and signed by you and your instructor.
  4. We need a photocopy of your Driver's License. A good fax or scan/email of the licence is acceptable.

PROOF OF COURSE COMPLETION FOR POSSIBLE INSURANCE DISCOUNTS

Students wanting proof of course completion for possible insurance discounts, that have been processed through the
on-line certification system, may need to obtain their Driver Licence History (DLH) by going to a SERVICE ONTARIO office. There is $12 fee for this service and only the license holder may apply for this due to Privacy Laws.

Note:
It takes approx. 2 weeks for Service Ontario to receive the information after we have certified you.

DriveTest appointments are normally 3 to 6 weeks from the date you call.  DriveTest requires 48 hours notice
for cancellations or rescheduling. They charge $40 for late cancellations or missed appointments.
